As an aid to choosing between different places to retire, the Walk Score is pretty handy. Every house, neighborhood, and city in the U.S. has been given a Walk Score from 0 to 100. The Walk Score tells you how easy it is to walk from that address to grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops, schools, recreation areas and the like.
In addition to being able to see a Walk Score at walkscore.com, Zillow is now showing a Walk Score for every house it lists. As an example of how the score works, here are a couple of houses in Capitola, a tiny beach town in Northern California. Both houses are fairly close to the beach, but this one only gets a walk score of 51:
